The murder of George Floyd, a Black man, at the hands of Minneapolis, Minnesota Police officers sparked an uprising the likes of which this nation had not seen since the beginning of the civil rights movement in the Late 1950s.
It was May 25th, 2020. The nation was in the grips of the most horrible and terrifying time in a hundred years, the COVID-19 pandemic. Uncertainty of life compounded by years of inequality and injustice culminated in protests, riots, and calls for change. Hundreds of thousands of individuals marched demanding justice and reform. The United States was a tender box on the verge of burning out of control. Leadership from the nation's highest office was non-existent. Black Lives Matter was the cry of the people.
You, my people, captured the world's attention. I remember thinking to myself, “Now What?”
Now that we have the world's attention, how can we harness the energy into substantive change?
The results were rare indictments and convictions of the police officers directly responsible for George Floyd’s murder. A few tokens of policy changes within some local police departments, and a lot of posturing and promises made by politicians strategically waiting for all the fuss to die down.
And you know what happened? It did.
The most seismic result of the outrage that began in May of 2020 was voting out an out-of-control President. Unfortunately, the tentacles of his malignancy were for the most part, left in place. And they have wreaked havoc ever since. Like any malignancy that goes unchecked, it continues to grow and causes death and destruction.
Grim analogy? Maybe. Any truth to it? You better believe it!
